Who is to blame for the worlds population problem, developed or developing countries??
Both are to blame. Developing countries are adding more people, but people added in a developed country have a greater impact on the planet because of the concept of “True Cost”.
Where do population related problems seem to be the most serious?
In cities, because they attract people looking for jobs. As the population of the cities grows, so do the problems.
What are the reasons why population is growing so rapidly?
The main reason is the low status of women. Because of their low status in many cultures, they have no education, no job skills and no say about their family.
In some countries, such as India, many families have children until they get a son. There are abortions for girl fetuses after gender testing by the wealthy, and infanticide for the poor.
In some countries such as Nepal, there is a high infant mortality rate, so parents feel they have to have more children just in case.
The rapid growth of the world’s population over the past 100 years is not the result of a rise in crude birth rate, but a decline in the crude death rate, especially in developing countries. People are living longer because of increased food, better nutrition, improvements in medical health technology (immunizations & antibiotics) improvements in sanitation, personal hygiene and safer water supplies.
What are some problems associated with reducing population growth?
Some countries, such as India in the 1980’s, tried population control by force, which caused a rebellion.
In Christian countries such as the Phillipines, contraception is against the teachings of the Church, so many people are unwilling to use them
In some countries, such as Bolivia, women live in such isolated and remote areas that they do not have access to family planning or contraceptives
Countries such as Mexico have a male dominated society, and the women have no say.
What are some methods that can be used to slow population growth?
Raise the status of women
China tried a policy where there were rewards for having less children (extra food, larger pensions, better housing, free medical care) or penalties for having too many (higher taxes, fees)
Family planning
Contraceptives
Strict marriage ages (raising minimum age results in fewer children)
Lower infant mortality rates so fertility rates wont have to be so high to compenstate
